Shop Local Raleigh welcomes Jeff Milchen, an international leader in helping communities build vital local economies based on independent businesses and sustaining opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Milchen will discuss the economic and civic importance of sustaining a strong base of local, independently-owned business. He’ll provide numerous success stories of programs developed to support community-based businesses and keep them thriving in the face of competition from chains, online businesses, and others.

9:45am -11:30am – Training workshop for local business owners and concerned citizens. Training will include:
· Effective messaging to reach beyond the choir – the power of storytelling, examples of the psychology of persuasion and identifying your target audiences
· Making your local government an ally. How to build positive relationships, recognizing what matters to local officials, and policy measures to drive localization
· Website, database and email essentials for "Buy Independent / Buy Local" campaigns
· Identifying and engaging in local issues to build your local business organization
· Other topics may be covered depending on interest of the group

Directions & Parking:
The Hillsborough Street Community Center is located at 1 Maiden Lane across from the North Carolina State University Bell Tower on the corner of Hillsborough Street and Maiden Lane. Enter in the door off Maiden Lane above the Bell Tower Mart with red awnings.
Parking for this event will be available one block from the Hillsborough Street Community Center in the lot at the corner of the new Pullen Road extension and Oberlin Road. Thanks to Player’s Retreat, Red Hot & Blue, Locopops, and Sam & Bill's Hair Design for allowing us to use this lot.
