Meet the Owner of Lizzie Hanes Skincare, Lizzie Hanes. Located in the heart of Five Points, Lizzie Hanes skincare studio is locally owned and operated and tailors to your skincare needs. Lizzie didn’t always plan to own a skincare studio, but she has adapted and found her niche over the years, striving to help people look and feel their best through their skin. Lizzie describes her space as “An intimate specialized skincare and brow studio focusing on treatments and at-home skincare.”
Setting up Shop
Lizzie was born and raised in North Carolina. Originally from Boone, Lizzie then attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, with an interest in the medical field. She dabbled in a few different avenues of work, including working at a birthing center as a midwife. This then took her to Charlotte, North Carolina. Later on, Lizzie moved to New York City to work for the makeup and skincare brand Glossier. This inspired her to learn more about the world of skincare and attend esthetic school.
She attended the Aveda Institute in Soho, New York, pursuing further knowledge on the benefits of skincare, and gaining a more hands-on approach to beauty. Studying with skin professional Joelle Cicio in Paris, France also gave Lizzie a pivotal facial massaging experience and a hands-on learning approach.
After a few years of gaining experience in the industry, Lizzie decided to move to Raleigh, where she was able to find a space for her own business through a family friend. Opening her studio gave Lizzie the freedom to curate her personalized approach to skincare while building a space that she and her customers could feel comfortable in.
She is thorough and intentional about choosing products, assessing, and choosing quality over quantity. Her studio opened in November 2019, right before the start of the pandemic. She wanted her studio to be different. It is not a med spa but rather specializes in customized facials and brows. The business had to close for a few months during the pandemic, but Lizzie was slowly able to build clientele through word of mouth and has consistently built up her business over the years.
Business Growth
One of the things that Lizzie is most proud of since the genesis of her business is the expansion that she has had. Since opening, the studio now has a team of three estheticians, a front desk receptionist, and someone to run social media. She also takes pride in having built a good working environment amongst the staff.
Not only does she provide a good working environment, but Lizzie wants her clients and everyone who walks through her doors to feel welcomed and accepted. She believes that one of the main elements that separates her from many other studios is the fact that her team is never pushy or judgemental. They want to help every client find the route that is best for them and their skin, with no pressure to do or buy anything they aren’t comfortable with.
Putting the Client First
The end goal is for each person to feel confident and happy about their skin after each visit.
Owning a business comes with its ups and downs, but Lizzie’s favorite aspect of owning her studio is meeting all of her clients. She shared that she is a homebody, but she has been able to meet a plethora of amazing people throughout her career. Owning her studio has taught her that she can handle a lot more than she originally thought. Now, she can balance the different aspects of her work and personal life, which she stated has improved since getting a work phone and hiring people that she trusts. “Each year gets a little better,” Lizzie stated.
She describes her team as “skincare friends who are here to help you fix any skin issues, or just have a place to relax.”
Since moving to the area, Lizzie has been able to enjoy everything Raleigh has to offer. She enjoys that Raleigh feels like a small town, but has the opportunities and activities that a big city has. It feels community-driven and has everything that she needs in a city.
