Local Chefs Preparing for September Support School Meals Campaign
The North Carolina Partnership for Child Nutrition (NCPCN) officially launched it Support School Meals campaign September 1st, with the goal of raising $300,000 to help increase the school meal participation rate in Wake County. More than 40 Wake County restaurants are participating in the Support School Meals campaign by offering customers the opportunity to donate $5 when paying their bill throughout the month of September, with 100% of the proceeds going to support this goal.
Current school lunch participation rates are low. Increased participation in school lunch leads to increased resources, allowing school nutrition services to have a broader impact on the health of our children. Potential outcomes may include universal free breakfast, more innovative meal programs and engagement opportunities for kids through food.
“We’re encouraging Wake County residents to eat out in September, to experience amazing food and help us raise $300,000 for our Support School Meals campaign,” said NCPCN co-founder Steve Mangano. “These funds will help us work with Child Nutrition Services to enhance the school nutrition program and increase participation rates for school meals across the school-age population. We envision a school lunchroom that is inclusive, equitable and encouraging for all students, teachers, and staff.”
Participating chefs come from all corners of Wake County and include recent James Beard winner Ashley Christensen and other top chefs like Scott Crawford and Sean Fowler. Great local establishments like La Farm Bakery, Mandolin and Videri Chocolate will be cooking up great food in the month of September to join the Support School Meals campaign.
