🔬 Science Café at Museum of Natural Sciences 2/19
This talk will explore new fossils collected from Jones County and deposited in the early Miocene, about 20 million years ago, that are beginning to shed light on an unusual land mammal fauna from our state. Sean Moran is the Collections Manager of Paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Though responsible for managing and growing the Museum’s Paleontology Research Collections, from fossil crabs to dinosaurs, ferns to sharks, his research interests mostly relate to the evolution and ecology of terrestrial mammals over the last 34 million years. 7pm. In this bold world premiere, Resident Choreographer Amy Hall Garner reimagines Carmen Suite with powerful theatricality and a fresh choreographic voice, set to Bizet’s iconic score. Presented alongside Zalman Raffael’s Book of Esther, a collaboration with the North Carolina Museum of Art, inspired by the Museum’s exhibition. 🎭 Red Pitch at Burning Coal Theatre 2/19-22
Red Pitch tells the story of Bilal, Omz, and Joey, three boys growing up in south London. As gentrification and economic development threaten to destroy their neighborhood, these lifelong friends must reckon with what it means to grow up in a world that is constantly changing around them, while finding solace in the game of soccer and the community they’re building for themselves. 🎭 Moonlight and Magnolias at Raleigh Little Theatre 2/20-22
1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, because something’s not right with the script. Summoning both famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and formidable director Victor Fleming, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five frenzied days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time. QuiltCon is the largest modern quilting event in the world. It features a vibrant quilt show full of competition quilts, community outreach quilts, and special exhibits as well as an enticing vendor hall, with all booths curated with the modern quilter in mind. Step into a world where science meets fandom at this adults 21+ after-hours celebration of the art, stories, and pop culture of Japanese animation. Acclaimed violinist Vadim Gluzman performs with Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, and the North Carolina Symphony. He will perform Tchaikovsky’s legendary Violin Concerto on the very Stradivarius violin for which it was written, a rare and thrilling link to musical history! Tickets
🚃 Black History Trolley Tours 2/21-22
Join the Historic Raleigh Trolley for this special edition of the popular Black history tour highlighting Oberlin Village. Tours will begin at Mordecai Historic Park and travel to Oberlin, where passengers will disembark for a tour of the Historic Turner House and Oberlin Cemetery and learn about the neighborhood’s history of community and freedom. 1pm + 2:30pm. Shop handmade art, jewelry, goods, and more made by talented local teens and get a chance to make something of your own at the DIY craft tables.
