I have been with Shop Local Raleigh for about 3 months. During that time, I have read multiple studies on how local businesses give more to the community. The study we cite most often is from the Civics Economic Study on Wake County 2012. According to the CES, locally owned, independent businesses recirculate 51.1% of their revenues back into the local economy compared to the 13.6% recirculation by chains. It is easy to quote a study but I wanted to see the charitable spirit of local businesses for myself.
Peachy Keen and Joint Venture Jewelry are local businesses in Cary owned by Lee and Donna Hankin. They opened Joint Venture Jewelry in 1998, providing many services to the jewelry wearers in the area. Lee is responsible for all appraisals, repairs, as well as jewelry cleaning and polishing. He oversees all consignment take-ins, and consignor relations. Donna has background in human development, proven useful when helping struggling clients make a decision on their preferences.
Four years ago, the Hankin family decided to open the contemporary women’s clothing and lifestyle boutique, Peachy Keen, creating a unique shop that houses both businesses. Together with their family and staff, they offer a one-stop shop for fashion needs.
Each year, Peachy Keen hosts their fall fashion show to present the latest fashions and more importantly, give back. On September 29, Peachy Keen is partnering with Headbands of Hope to advocate Childhood Cancer Awareness with the charity fashion show.Proceeds from the tickets and a percentage of sales during the event will go to help fund the Headbands of Hope Duke Children’s Hospital Prom. You can help by attending the show!
When speaking with local business owners, you see the passion for what they do and their commitment to help the community. The charitable spirit of independent businesses is strong in Wake County and especially with the folks at Joint Venture and Peachy Keen.
You can help by attending the Peachy Wears Hope Fall Fashion Show on September 29 at 7:00pm! We hope to see you there with us, shopping for hope while shopping local.
