Meet the Owner: The Paystub People’s Kim Davis

Meet the Owner

Welcome to Meet the Owner! Shop Local Raleigh is committed to telling the story of Wake County’s locally-owned, independent businesses. We take pride in the character these businesses bring to our community and local economy. When shopping at a locally-owned business, you are more than likely interacting with the owner! We started this blog series to help you get to know the local business owners in our community.

This time we caught up with Kim Davis, owner of The Paystub People. Kim’s business specializes in payroll solutions for local businesses. When working with Kim and The Paystub People, you receive the personal service that makes you part of the payroll family. Here is what Kim had to say about starting her business, being a longtime Raleigh native and some advice for new entrepreneurs.

What motivated/inspired you to open a business?

I wanted to continue my career in payroll but did not want to work with the national companies. They did not have a great reputation in the marketplace and I wanted to do better.
What is your businesses concept?
We show local business owners a better way to Payday!

What “sparked” the idea for your concept?
I met with a business broker while networking. He told me several stories of “regular people” starting their own business. It helped me realize it was something I could do.

What makes owning a business in Wake County special?
I absolutely love meeting all the different business in our community. Their stories for how things got started are so inspiring.

What are some of your favorite local businesses to support (besides yours)?
A few of my favorite locals are Piedmont Litho, Merchant Match Charity and Edible Art (yum).

What advice would you give to a new business owner?
Surround yourself with smart successful business owners and learn from their experience.

How long have you lived in the Triangle?
I was born in Raleigh and have lived here my whole life!

What are you passionate about outside of your business?
Starting a nonprofit for a birth defect my son was born with and mentoring new families with the same issue. I also like to spend time at my church!
