Meet the Owner of Bright Sky Aesthetics, Shonna Mclean! Shonna runs her own practice offering comprehensive skin care solutions, specializing in everything from dermal fillers and microchanneling to injectables to help relax those wrinkles. She and her team offer a range of services designed to enhance your natural beauty safely and effectively.
Switching Gears
Shonna is an Ohio native, moving around from Nashville, to California, to South Carolina until settling in Raleigh in 2011. She attended Kent State University for her Bachelors degree, and Vanderbilt University for her Masters degree. With 25 years of nursing experience, and practicing as a Nurse Practitioner since 2009. Her career began in family practice, and she then specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. However, as a mother of two, she sought more flexibility.
Aesthetics was a field Shonna wanted to explore further, seeing it as a way to help people differently.
Though she never planned on owning a business, Shonna decided to open her own studio after attempting to balance ownership with another local practice. She found a workspace at Smoothe & Co, a local spa, and took the leap to start something new at 46, a decision she is incredibly proud of.
Shonna performs a vast amount of services for people in her space. She works on a range of cosmetic services including lip flips, inject botulinum toxin injectables for wrinkles and fine lines, and dermal fillers which can help with lost volume,smoothing wrinkles, and restoring facial contour.
Although she has already developed a substantial list of services that she offers, Shonna is adamant about continuously learning. She shared that she is continuously “growing in education,” by taking as many trainings and courses as possible.
It is important for her to be up to date on the latest techniques and improve her knowledge base on the services that she offers and potential future services. Shonna is a member of TAP (Triangle Aesthetics Providers) and attends meetings on how to improve the safety of Aesthetics in the Triangle.
Aside from her services, Shonna has also learned the intricacies of owning a business. She quickly learned what was involved that she didn’t realize, such as social media and posting everyday. There are many things one needs to take into account when opening a business such as marketing, inventory, unexpected expenses, having a supervising physician, and the cost of startup.
Shonna was able to open the door of Bright Sky Aesthetics on September 7, 2023.
Confidence is Key
Shonna’s goal and what she delivers everyday is to give her clients the most natural results and help people get their confidence back. Bright Sky is a place to come to regain and refresh yourself. Her favorite part about owning her own business is the education and being able to meet new people every day. She is delighted to have such phenomenal clients who she enjoys sitting down and having conversations with.
When she’s not performing one of her many services, Shonna is spending time with her children, relaxing at the beach, or exercising. She tries to block out time in her schedule to take time for herself. She has learned that “it’s okay to take time for myself. It is hard but you have to do it.” Owning a business has taught Shonna to budget her time. She also shared that since opening her business, she has learned how to say no when necessary.
Be Prepared
For upcoming business owners, Shonna recommends doing research inside and out, reading books, and taking courses to be prepared. Her husband has also been a guiding voice in her journey, as he has experience as a business owner of a real estate rental company. Her 2 girls, Olivia and Penny, also play a role in her business by helping with organization and media content creation.
Shonna is always learning and growing. In addition to growing in the space she has now, she is in the process of renovating and converting a building in Wendell into a Medical Spa. Some of the services they intend to offer include injections, laser services, massage therapy, esthetician services, and permanent makeup.
Shonna's advice for other business owners is, “if you have a dream, go for it.”
Shonna has spread her wings in Raleigh and created a space to make everyone feel like an elevated version of themselves. Her favorite part of Raleigh is how spread out it is. There are different pockets of Raleigh to explore that offer different things. There is no lack of places to explore or eat.
