Meet the Owner: Sara Fitzpatrick - The Cupcake Shoppe
For nearly 20 years, The Cupcake Shoppe has been serving Raleigh with handcrafted desserts, specialty coffee, and sweet moments worth celebrating. What began as a passion for beautiful confections has grown into a beloved community gathering place, thanks to the vision and dedication of owner Sara Fitzpatrick.
As part of our Meet the Owner series, we spoke with Sara to learn more about the journey that led her to open The Cupcake Shoppe, the inspiration behind her creations, and what continues to motivate her nearly two decades later.

From Corporate Sales to Cupcakes: How the Dream Began
While Sara always loved baking and had a deep appreciation for beautiful desserts, she never initially envisioned it becoming a career. For years after college, baking remained a creative outlet while she pursued a successful path in the corporate world.
That changed while working in corporate sales in Florida. Although professionally successful, Sara found herself longing for a more creative and fulfilling future. At the same time, she missed North Carolina and felt a strong pull toward home.
During a holiday visit back to Raleigh, she discovered a storefront on Glenwood Avenue with large windows and endless potential. Located in a neighborhood she loved, the space immediately sparked something special.
Inspired by the opportunity to create a place where people could gather, celebrate, and enjoy thoughtfully crafted desserts, Sara began building the vision that would eventually become The Cupcake Shoppe.

A Bakery That Became a Community Gathering Place
When The Cupcake Shoppe first opened, Sara envisioned a warm, welcoming European-style café filled with natural light and beautiful desserts, with cupcakes taking center stage.
While that original vision remains at the heart of the business today, the bakery has evolved into something much larger than a dessert destination.
Over the years, it has become a morning coffee stop for local professionals, a favorite outing for families, a workspace for remote workers seeking a change of scenery, and a trusted partner for weddings, birthdays, and celebrations of every kind.
Most importantly, The Cupcake Shoppe has become part of the memories and milestones of countless customers throughout the Raleigh community. Being woven into those stories is something Sara considers one of the greatest privileges of owning the business.
Finding Inspiration Through Creativity and Collaboration
One of the things Sara values most about The Cupcake Shoppe is the talented team she works alongside every day. She credits much of the bakery’s continued creativity and success to the collaboration and ideas shared among her staff.
The team draws inspiration from seasonal ingredients, current food trends, customer requests, fashion, and design. Their ability to blend classic techniques with fresh ideas has helped keep the bakery’s offerings both timeless and exciting.
Recently, they’ve especially enjoyed creating vintage-inspired wedding and celebration cakes, a trend that combines nostalgia with artistry. At the same time, they’ve continued to experiment with new beverage offerings, including seasonal latte creations and refreshing lemonade flavors made with house-made syrups.
The Desserts Sara Loves Most
Despite overseeing a bakery filled with tempting desserts, Sara still has a few favorites she looks forward to year after year.
At the top of the list is The Cupcake Shoppe’s classic Red Velvet cupcake. With its soft texture and signature cream cheese frosting, it holds special meaning because it reminds her of her grandmother and the memories associated with family traditions.
Another favorite is the bakery’s seasonal ice cream sandwich collection, which returns each summer. Featuring soft brownie cookies paired with rich ice cream flavors, the treats have become a customer favorite and the perfect way to cool off during a hot Raleigh afternoon.
A Commitment to Quality and Community
What truly sets The Cupcake Shoppe apart is its unwavering commitment to quality.
From scratch-made desserts crafted with premium ingredients to locally roasted coffee from Joe Van Gogh, every product reflects the bakery’s dedication to excellence. Equally important is the level of care provided by the team, whether they’re serving a morning coffee, helping a customer choose the perfect birthday cake, or assisting a couple with wedding dessert planning.
That commitment to quality, service, and community has allowed The Cupcake Shoppe to remain a Raleigh staple for nearly two decades.
Lessons Learned
Like many small businesses, The Cupcake Shoppe has faced its share of challenges. Over the years, Sara successfully navigated both a major economic recession and a global pandemic; two events that tested the resilience of independent businesses everywhere.
Those experiences reinforced the importance of adaptability, trust, and keeping an open mind when faced with unexpected obstacles.
Perhaps the biggest lesson, however, has been the importance of investing in people. Sara firmly believes that a strong team is the foundation of a successful business. By supporting employees, fostering creativity, and building a culture of care, she has created an environment where both the staff and the business can thrive together.
Looking Ahead
As The Cupcake Shoppe approaches its 20th year, Sara remains excited about the future and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the Raleigh community.
She looks forward to working alongside her talented team, creating new desserts and experiences, and continuing to play a small part in the celebrations and milestones of customers throughout the city.
While there are always new ideas and creations on the horizon, one thing customers can count on is the return of the bakery’s beloved ice cream sandwiches each summer. Available from Memorial Day through Labor Day, they have become a seasonal tradition that many customers eagerly await.
