Meet the Owner of Element Gastropub

In the heart of Raleigh, Element Gastropub is breaking boundaries in the plant-based food scene, offering a welcoming experience for both vegans and omnivores alike. Element Gastropub - Lelia Kidd

A Raleigh Native with a Chemistry Background

Lelia’s journey to Element started right here in Raleigh, where she grew up and attended Rolesville High School and NC State. With a background in Chemistry, her path as a chef may not seem conventional, but her knowledge has been instrumental in shaping the creative and nutrient-packed flavors that define Element. Her interest in food dates back to her childhood, cooking with family and exploring fresh ingredients from the family garden. This early love for food only grew stronger as she experimented with plant-based cuisine, a choice initially inspired by personal health struggles in 2012.

In 2019, Lelia founded Veg South, a plant-based catering business in Franklin County. It was around this time that she reconnected with Carey, an old friend, who would soon become her business partner and husband. Together, they shared a vision of making vegan food approachable, familiar, and rooted in the comfort of Southern dining.

The Birth of Element Gastropub

The idea behind Element is inspired by Lelia’s Chemistry background. Just as elements serve as the building blocks in science, food can be the simplest way to bring people together. This connection to her roots is part of what makes Element special. Lelia explains, “Food is the simplest way of showing love or bringing together a community.” In May 2021, after a year of renovations and anticipation, Element opened its doors, and Raleigh’s food lovers were introduced to a new kind of dining experience.

Element quickly became a local favorite with its plant-based take on comfort food, from Chik’n N Waffles to a rich Philly Cheesesteak and Pop’s Buttercream Cheesecake. A fan favorite drink, the Pineapple Pepperita—a tantalizing mix of pineapple, cilantro, tajin, and jalapeno—perfectly exemplifies the creativity at Element.

Changing Perceptions, One Dish at a Time

One of Lelia’s favorite aspects of running Element is seeing customers’ minds open to vegan food, especially those who might have been skeptical. She takes pride in providing a space where vegan families and curious newcomers alike can feel welcome. The restaurant’s diverse, all-female kitchen team, many from international backgrounds, plays a vital role in bringing her vision to life, allowing Lelia to balance work with family and personal life.

Element Gastropub - Lelia Kidd

“Vegan food is not just tofu and lettuce. If you've had a bad experience, don't let that stop you from giving Element a try. We will find something you like.”

Always Innovating

Lelia is always thinking of new ways to improve. She has been toying with the idea of serving cannabis-infused dinners and cocktails for guests who prefer alternatives to alcohol. Her Chemistry expertise helps her craft unique flavor profiles and keeps Element’s menu evolving.

Experience Vegan Dining in a New Element

For those who haven’t tried vegan food, Lelia’s advice is simple: “Vegan food is not just tofu and lettuce. If you’ve had a bad experience, don’t let that stop you from giving Element a try. We will find something you like.” Whether you’re a plant-based pro or simply curious, Element Gastropub welcomes all to enjoy the delicious possibilities of vegan dining in a cozy, Southern-inspired setting.
